Sunday Independent - 7 November 2009 - review by Pol O Conghaile. Imelda Sheedy-King can permit herself a blush. The owner of this 18th - century gem is “the heart and soul of the place”, the “perfect hostess, attending to every detail”, according to Good Hotel Guide reports. The five-bed house is “comfortable” and guests are advised to give plenty of notice (and bring their own wine) it they wish to avail of Imelda’s cooking. Add-ons include “fluffy towels” and Wi-Fi, and spacious bedrooms boast views of the Ballyhoura Mountains. Details: Flemingstown House (063 98093; flemingstown.com) has B&B from €60pps, set-dinner at €45 and “special rates” for stays of more than one night. Open from March to October. Sunday Times Review - Irish GuestHouse Of The Year Lucky you: Well, that’s if Imelda Sheedy-King has anything to do with the care of guests at Flemingstown House. The farm is at the back: at the front is Imelda’s guesthouse, where she dispenses a brand of hard-working hospitality that has won a legion of devoted fans. One couple enjoyed the warmth of her welcome so much, they came back to celebrate a 50th birthday — and brought 70 friends along for the party. The location: in the heart of the rural southwest. Kilmallock, one of Ireland’s most important medieval towns, is three miles up the road, and the delightful coast is within day-tripping distance. The rooms: obviously, Imelda isn’t running a hotel like Hope Street, so don’t expect DVD players, but in every other respect the rooms are excellent. Mine was a good size, spotless, and home to a large, firm bed and a powerful shower. 9/10 The decor: the house is decked out in solid, respectable style, with some beautifully kept antique pieces. 8/10 The food: both dinner and breakfast were highlights of the stay. Dinner was five courses: pâté, a home-made cucumber soup, chicken, an exquisite rhubarb tart and Imelda’s sister’s own cheddar cheese. The quality, balance and measured pace were remarkable, given that it had all been produced by Imelda herself in the farmhouse kitchen. 9/10 The service: there’s plenty of chance to chat, but at all the right moments you are left in peace. 9/10 Value for money: 10/10 Does it deserve its César? It deserves two: one for the house and one for Imelda’s energy and attention to detail. |
